Anger Management
Anger is natural, but Islam teaches us to master it with wisdom.
Summary
Anger is a natural emotion created by Allah, but it can lead to sin if not controlled. Islam does not ask us to suppress anger, but to master it. The truly strong person is the one who controls themselves in the moment of anger.
Why master anger?
Uncontrolled anger can destroy relationships, hurt loved ones, and lead to words or actions we regret. Under the influence of anger, one may utter words of divorce, sever family ties, or commit injustices.
The Prophet ﷺ described anger as a burning coal in the heart. The more you feed it, the more it burns. Wisdom lies in extinguishing it quickly.
Evidence from the Quran and Sunnah
« Those who spend in ease and in hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people — and Allah loves the doers of good. »
— Quran, Surah Āl-'Imrān (3:134)
« The strong man is not the one who overcomes people by his strength, but the strong man is the one who controls himself while in anger. »

A man said to the Prophet ﷺ: "Give me advice." He replied: "Do not get angry." The man repeated his request several times, and each time the Prophet ﷺ replied: "Do not get angry."

« If one of you becomes angry while standing, let him sit down. If the anger leaves him, (well and good). If not, let him lie down. »

✅ Practical advice from the Prophet ﷺ
- •Change position: If standing, sit down. If sitting, lie down.
- •Stay silent: Don't speak until the anger has calmed.
- •Perform ablutions: Water extinguishes the fire of anger.
- •Seek refuge: Say « A'ūdhu billāhi min ash-shaytān ir-rajīm ».
- •Leave the place: Distance yourself from the source of anger.
Concrete example
You argue with someone and feel anger rising. Instead of responding immediately, say: 'Excuse me, I need 5 minutes.' Go for a walk, perform ablutions if possible, and return when you are calm. This pause can save a relationship and prevent regrets.
🤲 Du'a
« I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed. »
