Gratitude (Shukr)

Thanking Allah for His visible and invisible, apparent and hidden blessings.

Summary

Shukr (gratitude) is acknowledging Allah's blessings and being grateful to Him through the heart, tongue, and deeds. Gratitude attracts more blessings, while ingratitude leads to their loss.

The three levels of gratitude

1. With the heart: Inwardly recognizing that every blessing comes from Allah alone.

2. With the tongue: Saying « Al-Hamdulillah » sincerely and consciously, not just out of habit.

3. With deeds: Using Allah's blessings in obedience to Him and not in disobedience.

Evidence from the Quran and Sunnah

« And when your Lord proclaimed: If you are grateful, I will surely increase you in favor. But if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe. »

— Quran, Surah Ibrahim (14:7)

« And few of My servants are grateful. »

— Quran, Surah Saba' (34:13)

The Prophet ﷺ would pray at night until his feet swelled. Aisha asked him: «Why do you do this when Allah has forgiven your past and future sins?» He replied: «Should I not be a grateful servant?»

« Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah. »

✅ Practical advice

  • •Keep a gratitude journal: note 3 blessings each day
  • •Say « Al-Hamdulillah » consciously, thinking about the blessing
  • •Look at those who have less than you, not those who have more
  • •Thank the people who do good to you

Concrete example

Instead of mechanically saying « Al-Hamdulillah » after eating, take a moment to reflect: «Allah gave me this food, a roof, the health to eat, hands to carry the food...» This awareness transforms a simple word into true gratitude.

🤲 Du'a

« O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner. »

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

— Reported by Abu Dawud — Exact reference and attribution to be confirmed.
