Politeness

Gentleness and courtesy are an integral part of the Muslim faith.

Summary

Politeness (Al-Adab) encompasses good manners, courtesy, respect and gentleness in all our interactions. The Prophet ﷺ was the perfect example of politeness and good conduct toward all.

Forms of politeness in Islam

The greeting (Salam): Greeting with « As-salamu 'alaykum » and responding with something even better.

The smile: Welcoming people with a radiant face is a form of charity.

Gentle speech: Choosing the best words and avoiding anything that hurts.

Gestures: Holding the door, giving up one's seat, helping carry loads.

Evidence from the Quran and Sunnah

« And speak to him with gentle speech. Perhaps he will be reminded or fear Allah. »

— Quran, Surah Ta-Ha (20:44)

(Allah commanding Moses and Aaron to speak gently to Pharaoh)

« And tell My servants to say what is best. Indeed, Satan induces discord among them. »

— Quran, Surah Al-Isra' (17:53)

✅ Practical advice

  • •Smile at every person you meet
  • •Start with the Salam before any conversation
  • •Say « Jazak Allahu khayran » to thank
  • •Avoid hurtful words, even in jest
  • •Hold the door, give up your seat to the elderly

Concrete example

When you enter somewhere, start by greeting with the Salam and a sincere smile, even if people seem busy. Before talking business or asking for something, take the time to greet and ask how they are. This small attention changes the whole atmosphere.

🤲 Du'a

« O Allah, as You have beautified my creation, also beautify my character. »

اللَّهُمَّ كَمَا حَسَّنْتَ خَلْقِي فَحَسِّنْ خُلُقِي
