Commerce & Transactions

How to trade in a halal and ethical manner according to Islam.

⚖️ General principles of commerce in Islam

"O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly but only in lawful business by mutual consent."

— Quran, An-Nisa' (4:29)

Lawfulness of the merchandise

The product or service sold must be lawful (halal).

Mutual consent

Both parties must agree on the terms without coercion or deception.

Transparency

Honestly describe the product, its qualities and defects.

Actual ownership

Only sell what you own or are certain you can deliver.

"The honest and trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs."

— Reported by At-Tirmidhi — Exact reference and attribution to be confirmed.

Major prohibitions

🔴 Riba (Usurious interest)

Any transaction where money generates money without a real exchange of goods or services.

"Allah has permitted trade and forbidden interest." — Quran, Al-Baqarah (2:275)

🔴 Gharar (Excessive uncertainty)

Selling something whose existence, quantity or quality is too uncertain. E.g.: selling a fish in the water, a bird in the sky.

🔴 Fraud and deception

Hiding defects, lying about origin, artificially inflating prices.

"Whoever deceives us is not of us." — Reported by Muslim — Exact reference and attribution to be confirmed.

🔴 Unjust monopoly (Ihtikar)

Stockpiling essential goods to create a shortage and drive up prices.

🔴 Selling haram products

Alcohol, pork, drugs, idols, pornography, etc.

Modern practical cases

💳 Credit card

✅ Permitted if repaid before interest applies. 🔴 Haram if interest is paid.

🌐 Online sales

✅ Permitted if the product is honestly described, deliverable, and there is a right of return for non-conformity.

📦 Dropshipping

🟡 Debated. Some scholars permit it if the seller has a firm agreement with the supplier and can guarantee delivery. Others consider there is too much gharar.

📈 Stock market investment

✅ Permitted to invest in companies whose activities are halal and that are not heavily indebted to conventional banks. Avoid banks, alcohol, gambling, controversial weapons.

📱 Recurring subscriptions

✅ Permitted if the service is clearly defined and the customer can cancel without excessive penalties.

Ethics of the Muslim merchant

  • •Absolute honesty: Never lie, even to sell more.
  • •Ease: Be easy in selling, buying and collecting debts.
  • •After-sales service: Honor warranties, accept legitimate returns.
  • •Respect for the customer: Do not take advantage of the customer's ignorance.
  • •Fair price: Do not inflate prices excessively.

"May Allah have mercy on a man who is easy when he sells, easy when he buys, and easy when he claims what is owed to him."

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell products with a very high margin?

There is no fixed limit on margin. However, it is discouraged to excessively exploit customer ignorance or shortage situations.

What if I sold something with a hidden defect?

You must inform the buyer and offer a choice: keep the product with a discount or return it. Honesty is obligatory even after the sale.
