Halal / Haram – Practical Cases
Clearly understand what is permitted and forbidden in your daily life.
📖 Introduction
✅ Halal (حلال)
What is permitted and lawful according to Islamic law.
🔴 Haram (حرام)
What is strictly forbidden. Committing a haram is a sin.
🟡 Makrûh (مكروه)
What is discouraged. Avoiding it is meritorious; doing it is not a sin.
⚪ Mubâh (مباح)
What is neutral, neither rewarded nor punished.
Fundamental principle: In Islam, the basic principle is permission (ibaha). Everything is permitted except what Allah has explicitly forbidden in the Quran or through His Prophet ﷺ.
⚖️ General principles
"Say: Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants, and the good things of provision?"
— Quran, Al-A'raf (7:32)
- 1.Basic rule: Everything is permitted except what Allah has forbidden by a clear text.
- 2.Intention matters: A permitted thing can become forbidden depending on intention (and vice versa in some cases).
- 3.Precaution (wara'): Staying away from the doubtful is recommended, but without going to extremes or accusing others.
"The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against doubtful matters has preserved his religion and his honor."
— Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim — Exact reference and attribution to be confirmed.
🍖 Food
What is forbidden (Haram):
- 🔴 Pork and all its derivatives (pork gelatin, lard, etc.)
- 🔴 Alcohol and everything intoxicating, even in small quantities
- 🔴 Meat not slaughtered according to Islamic rite (except fish and seafood)
- 🔴 Shed blood
- 🔴 Carrion (non-slaughtered animal)
- 🔴 What is sacrificed for other than Allah
What is permitted (Halal):
- ✅ Halal meat (slaughtered in Allah's name by a Muslim, Jew or Christian)
- ✅ Fish and seafood (according to the majority of scholars)
- ✅ Fruits, vegetables, grains
- ✅ Pure dairy products
⚠️ Ambiguous cases:
- • Gelatin: Check the origin (halal bovine, plant-based = OK; pork = Haram)
- • Flavors: 'Natural' flavors may contain alcohol as a solvent – scholarly disagreement
- • Enzymes: Check animal or microbial origin
💼 Finances & Work
What is forbidden (Haram):
- 🔴 Riba (usurious interest): Lending or borrowing with interest
- 🔴 Gambling (maysir): Lotteries, betting, casinos
- 🔴 Working in the production/sale of alcohol, pork, or other haram
- 🔴 Fraud, theft, corruption, bribery
"Allah has cursed the one who consumes interest, the one who gives it, the one who writes it, and the two witnesses. They are all equal (in sin)."
— Reported by Muslim — Exact reference and attribution to be confirmed.
What is permitted:
- ✅ Any lawful work with a negotiated salary
- ✅ Honest and transparent commerce
- ✅ Tips received for a service
- ✅ Corporate gifts (if no corruption)
⚠️ Debated cases:
- • Working in a conventional bank: the majority of scholars strongly discourage it
- • Credit card: permitted if repaid without paying interest
🎬 Entertainment & Media
What is forbidden:
- 🔴 Watching obscene or immoral content
- 🔴 Entertainment that leads to neglecting religious obligations
- 🔴 Backbiting and spreading rumors on social media
Points of disagreement:
- 🟡 Music: Scholars disagree. Some forbid it entirely, others permit certain forms without instruments or with lawful lyrics. Refer to a trusted scholar.
- 🟡 Series/films: Depends on the content. Avoid what contains immorality or normalizes the haram.
General rule: Any entertainment that contains no haram and does not distract from obligations is permitted. But moderation is always recommended.
👥 Social Relations
What is forbidden:
- 🔴 Lying: Except in 3 cases (reconciliation, war, between spouses to preserve harmony)
- 🔴 Backbiting (ghiba): Speaking about someone in their absence of what they would dislike
- 🔴 Slander (buhtan): Accusing someone of what they did not do
- 🔴 Betraying a promise or a trust
- 🔴 Cutting kinship ties without valid reason
"O you who have believed! Avoid much suspicion, for some suspicion is sin. And do not spy, nor backbite one another."
— Quran, Al-Hujurat (49:12)
How to act when in doubt?
- 1.Leave what is doubtful: "Leave what puts you in doubt for what does not." (At-Tirmidhi) — Exact reference and attribution to be confirmed.
- 2.Seek knowledge: Ask reliable and recognized scholars.
- 3.Do not judge others: Doubt is not certainty. Do not accuse those who act differently.
- 4.Avoid excess: Wara' (precaution) is good, but extremism (ghuluw) is blameworthy.

Frequently asked questions
Can I work in a conventional bank?
The majority of scholars consider it forbidden or strongly discouraged as it involves directly assisting riba. Some make an exception for positions unrelated to interest (cleaning, security), but it is preferable to avoid it.
What if I discover a product was not halal?
If you consumed it unknowingly, there is no sin on you. Ask Allah for forgiveness and be more vigilant in the future. 'Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.'
Is the meat of the 'People of the Book' halal in the West?
Scholars disagree. Some permit it (based on verse 5:5), others do not because modern slaughter methods often do not fulfill the conditions (name of God, slaughter). As a precaution, prefer certified halal meat.
Is non-halal beef gelatin permitted?
Scholars disagree. Some consider that chemical transformation changes the nature of the product (istihala), others do not. As a precaution, prefer halal, halal bovine or plant-based gelatin.
