The Fiqh of Travel
The rules of prayer and fasting for the traveler (musafir).
Who is considered a traveler (Musafir)?
The status of 'traveler' in Islam allows certain facilitations in acts of worship. Scholars have defined criteria to determine when one is considered a traveler.
📏 Travel distance
The majority of scholars consider that a journey of approximately 80-90 km (or more) allows traveler facilitations. This is the equivalent of about 4 "burud" (ancient measure).
Note: Some scholars (like Ibn Taymiyyah) consider that it is what is commonly called 'travel' in the culture, without a fixed distance.
⏱️ Duration of stay
Scholars disagree on the maximum duration during which one can shorten prayers:
- • Majority opinion: 4 days or less = traveler. Beyond = resident, pray normally.
- • Hanafi opinion: 15 days or less.
- • Other opinion: As long as one does not intend to settle permanently.
"Allah wants ease for you and does not want hardship for you."
— Quran, Al-Baqarah (2:185)
Prayer during travel
🔸 Qasr: Shortening prayers from 4 to 2 rak'a
The traveler can shorten 4-rak'a prayers (Dhuhr, 'Asr, 'Isha') to 2 rak'a.
- ✅ Dhuhr : 4 → 2 rak'a
- ✅ 'Asr : 4 → 2 rak'a
- ✅ 'Isha' : 4 → 2 rak'a
- ⚪ Fajr : Stays 2 rak'a (does not change)
- ⚪ Maghrib : Stays 3 rak'a (does not change)
"When you travel the earth, it is no sin for you to shorten your prayers."
— Quran, An-Nisa' (4:101)
🔹 Jam': Combining prayers
The traveler can combine certain prayers together:
- ✅ Dhuhr + 'Asr : Together at Dhuhr time (jam' taqdim) or 'Asr time (jam' ta'khir)
- ✅ Maghrib + 'Isha' : Together at Maghrib or 'Isha' time
- ❌ Fajr : Cannot be combined with any other prayer
The Prophet ﷺ combined Dhuhr and 'Asr together, and Maghrib and 'Isha' together during his travels. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
⚠️ When you cannot shorten
- • If you pray behind a resident imam, you must complete the prayer (4 rak'a)
- • If you decided to stay more than 4 days (according to the majority opinion)
- • If you have returned home (end of travel)
Fasting during travel
"Whoever among you is sick or on a journey, then an equal number of other days."
— Quran, Al-Baqarah (2:184)
🟢 The traveler has a choice
During Ramadan, the traveler can choose between:
- • Fasting if able without difficulty
- • Breaking fast and making up the days later
💡 What is the best choice?
Scholars disagree:
- • If fasting is easy: Better to fast to avoid accumulating a debt
- • If fasting is difficult: Better to break fast — it is a facilitation from Allah
- • If fasting causes harm: It is discouraged or even forbidden to fast
The Prophet ﷺ said: "It is not piety to fast while traveling" (when fasting becomes too difficult).
— Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim
Traveler's etiquette (Adab)
- 1.Travel du'a:
« Subhâna-lladhî sakh-khara lanâ hâdhâ wa mâ kunnâ lahu muqrinîn. Wa innâ ilâ Rabbinâ la-munqalibûn. »
(Glory be to the One who subjected this to us, for we were not capable of controlling it. And indeed, to our Lord we shall return.)
- 2.Take provisions: Do not depart without preparation.
- 3.Travel in a group if possible: The Prophet ﷺ said: "The lone traveler is a devil." (At-Tirmidhi)
- 4.Designate a group leader: To organize the journey.
- 5.Du'a upon return: « Âyibûna, tâ'ibûna, 'âbidûna, li-Rabbinâ hâmidûn. »
- 6.Respect the laws of the visited country: As long as they do not contradict Islam.

Frequently asked questions
I commute daily for work (100 km). Am I a traveler?
The majority of scholars consider that the usual daily commute does not grant traveler status. Travel involves an unusual displacement with an overnight stay elsewhere.
Can I shorten prayers if I am on a layover at the airport?
Yes, as long as you are traveling and have not reached your final destination with the intention of staying more than 4 days (according to the majority opinion).
I am staying 3 weeks with my family abroad. Can I shorten prayers?
According to the majority opinion, if you know from the start that you will stay more than 4 days, you pray normally (4 rak'a) from your arrival. Some scholars are more lenient.
Should I pray Tarawih while traveling during Ramadan?
Tarawih is a sunnah, not an obligation. While traveling, you may pray it if you wish, or leave it without sin in order to rest.
