Stop and Pause Signs (Waqf)
Waqf rules are essential for correctly understanding and reciting the Quran without altering its meaning.
Waqf (الوقف) refers to the art of stopping correctly during Quran recitation. Stopping at the wrong place can completely change the meaning of a verse.
Tajwīd scholars have established precise symbols to guide reciters on places where it is permitted, recommended, or forbidden to stop.
| Sign | Name | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| م | Waqf Lāzim | Mandatory stop |
| لا | Lā | Do not stop |
| ج | Waqf Jā'iz | Stop or continue (both are permitted) |
| صلى | Ṣalā | Better to continue |
| قلى | Qalā | Better to stop |
| شۛ شۛ | Mu'ānaqa | Stop at only one of the two |
| سۛ | Saktah | Short pause without breathing |
1. Preserve meaning: An inappropriate stop can completely change the significance of a verse.
2. Beautify recitation: Well-placed pauses give fluidity and harmony to reading.
3. Respect tradition: Waqf rules are part of the Tajwīd science transmitted since the Companions.
"Whoever recites the Quran correctly applying its rules will have a double reward." (From ʿĀʾisha رضي الله عنها - Reported by Al-Bukhari)
- Always prefer recommended stops (م، ط، ج)
- Avoid stopping at forbidden places (لا)
- When in doubt, continue to the next permitted stop
- Practice regularly with a qualified teacher
